It might surprise you to know that pants were probably first worn in ancient China or Central Asia by the Scythians or the Mongols and were made of wool, meant for riding. Pants or some form of them were also unisex and both men and women wore them in various cultures across the world. From the term pantaloon, possibly inspired by the Hindi ‘Patloon’, to the pajama, many of the words for pants originate from the old world. Though, over centuries, they became more associated with the masculine, more part of men’s wear, especially in early Western society. Did you know that there was a time when women could be jailed for wearing pants? Sounds incredulous, doesn’t it? Over the years, pants became a unisex item of clothing as women started to go out to work and also wearing pants were seen as an expression of women’s rights. During the Second World War, women started to wear pants in larger numbers and slowly, they became a normal item in women’s closets. Today, pants are worn by both men and women and encompass a wide range of styles.
